Impella® Skills Video: Entering Cardiac Output

This Impella skills video demonstrates how to enter cardiac output into the Automated Impella Controller™ (AIC) for Impella CP® with SmartAssist® and Impella 5.5® with SmartAssist®. The AIC continuously calculates cardiac output (CO) and cardiac power output (CPO) but requires a CO value to be entered every 8 hours.

Enter the reference cardiac output, which is the patient’s total cardiac output, immediately following a reference measurement.

  1. Press the MENU soft button.

  2. Select the “Enter Cardiac Output” using the rotary knob.

  3. Enter the total Cardiac Output, which can be any value from 0.0 to 10.0 L/min in increments of 0.1 L/min.

  4. Press the DONE soft button or the rotary knob to complete.

Following cardiac output entry, the AIC will automatically calculate CPO. If the CPO is less than or equal to 0.6 watts, the value will be displayed in yellow.

The AIC will continuously update CO and CPO for up to 8 hours. CO should be entered every 8 hours, or if there is a change in the patient’s vascular state. A white notification to enter a new cardiac output will appear 7 hours after the last CO entry. If a new CO value is not entered after 8 hours, the CO value will display as dashes until a new CO value is entered.

The cardiac output and cardiac power output metrics are for informational purposes only and should not be used for diagnostic purposes or for patient monitoring
