AMI Cardiogenic Shock
Clinical Presentation and In-Hospital Trajectory of Heart Failure and Cardiogenic Shock
In this brief presentation from the Cardiogenic Shock Working Group Global Summit 2023, Jaime Hernandez-Montfort, MD, MPH, MSc, FACC, FHFSA focusses on management of heart failure cardiogenic shock (HF-CS) within the first 12 to 24 hours. He explains that HF-CS is a complex, but actionable, pathophysiologic disease. Patients benefit from early identification and referral to centers for advanced heart failure treatment and recovery. He explains that patients presenting with de novo heart failure had higher in-hospital mortality compared to patients presenting with acute on chronic heart failure, but also were more likely to be discharged with their own heart. He describes refractory cardiogenic shock as a progressive disease and discusses temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) options, focusing on evaluation for native heart survival. Dr. Hernandez-Montfort is a member of the Cardiogenic Shock Working Group (CSWG) steering committee.
