Educational Grant Frequently Asked Questions
The following is provided for informational purposes to organizations that are considering applying for an Abiomed Educational Grant. Additional requirements and conditions are contained in the application and agreement process.
What Activity Types are Eligible?
Eligible programs typically include medical conferences, trainings and professional meetings sponsored by medical associations, academic medical centers, medical schools and continuing medical education (CME) providers.
Abiomed also provides educational grants to healthcare entities based outside the United States (OUS) so that OUS physicians may attend such programs.
Programs may be accredited and unaccredited.
Abiomed is particularly interested in supporting bona fide educational activities that focus on:
Mechanical circulatory support (MCS)
MCS in cardiogenic shock
MCS in heart failure critical care
MCS supported percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), including high-risk PCI, hemodynamic support, right heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), cardiomyopathy, ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) and acute kidney injury (AKI)
MCS in low cardiac output syndrome
MCS site access and closure in large-bore cases
Technologies complementary to Abiomed’s devices, including but not limited to MCS with Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy, Rotablator rotational atherectomy and structural heart procedures
Abiomed’s educational grants do not support:
Programs that have already occurred
Programs that could reward or induce past or future orders, lease, use or recommendations of Abiomed products
Programs that could promote off-label use of Abiomed products
Commercial activities (Exhibits, advertising or other promotional opportunities)
Organizations on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals and Entities, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Excluded Parties List System or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Debarment List
International programs that are taking place in the European Economic Area (EEA), unless vetted and marked fully compliant by MedTech Europe’s Conference Vetting System (CVS)

What Application Materials are Required?
Applicants can generally expect to provide:
- Organization name and address
- Organization mission statement and history
- Organization tax forms (W8, W9, 501(c)3 letter, W8BENE, VAT number, etc.)
- Program start and end dates
- Amount of grant request
- Request currency code
- Whether the organization has received funding from Abiomed before
- If the proposed program is a bona fide educational program
- Program title
- Program location
- Program description
- Whether MCS will be part of the program
- Program directors and speakers
- Anticipated number of attendees
- Accreditation information (If applicable)
- What percentage of support would be provided by Abiomed
- Additional supporters/partners
- Program agenda
- Detailed, itemized budgets
- An Abiomed ACH transfer form
Who is Eligible to Apply?
Applications must be submitted by (and funds must go to) organizations, not individuals. Abiomed staff are not permitted to apply for educational grants on behalf of external applicants.
Applications must be submitted by the employers of OUS physicians that are seeking funds to attend bona fide educational programs. Applications may not be submitted by (or mention the names of) the OUS physicians that would ultimately travel to such programs.
When Should I Apply?
Abiomed’s Grants Committee meets and reviews applications once per month. To receive proper consideration, requests should generally be submitted sixty (60) days prior to program start dates to ensure sufficient time for review. Requests may not be submitted for programs that have already occurred.
How can Funding be used for Programs Funded by Abiomed US?
In addition to the previously mentioned details, programs funded by Abiomed US generally may not support multi-year commitments, honoraria, meals and travel expenses.
For accredited programs funded by Abiomed US, funding may be used for things like:
Accreditation fees, space rental, AV support, marketing, handout production and lab fees/materials
For unaccredited programs funded by Abiomed US, funding may be used for things like:
AV support, marketing, handout production and lab fees/materials

How can Funding be used for Programs Funded by Abiomed Germany?
In addition to the previously mentioned details, programs funded by Abiomed Germany may not support overhead expenses.
For programs funded by Abiomed Germany, funding may be used for things like:
Honoraria, meals, travel expenses, accreditation fees, space rental, AV support, marketing, handout production and lab fees/materials

What does the Grants Committee Consider?
The Grants Committee considers the alignment of content with Abiomed’s educational and/or research areas of focus, the educational impact of the program, the number and type of attendees, whether the requested funds are reasonable and consistent with industry standards (i.e., fair market value) and more.
How will I be Notified?
Applicants will be notified via email. Applicants may also check the status of their applications in the CyberGrants platform. We appreciate your patience and understanding as Abiomed’s review process is thorough.
Is there a Letter of Agreement?
Yes. All educational grant recipients must sign Abiomed’s letter of agreement.
Is there any Reconciliation?
Yes. Educational grant recipients must return Abiomed’s reconciliation form sixty (60) days after program end dates to ensure uninterrupted eligibility for future grant support.
Additionally, OUS healthcare entities will only be reimbursed for travel expenses for OUS physicians once applicants provide proof of attendance and travel receipts.
Any unused educational grant funding must be returned to Abiomed.
